Sensational Strawberries

June 20, 2018

Strawberry season is in full swing and who can resist these wonderful red berries. We all know that eating lots of fruit and veg is good for our health but what nutritional value do they actually have?

Well, strawberries are a rich source of fibre, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants such as anthocyanins and quercetin.

Adequate amounts of insoluble fibre can help maintain bowel health. Which assists in making sure we absorb nutrients well and get rid of toxins. A diet rich in potassium can aid in preventing high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease.

Quercetin is a flavonoid found in strawberries. It may have effects in reducing inflammation, blood pressure, and other risk factors for cardiovascular conditions.

Anthocyanins are plant pigments that provide the red color in strawberries. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may prove to be important for health.

It is always better to eat strawberries in their natural form rather than put them into a smoothie. This is because we can benefit more from the fibre content when they are not liquidised.  But having said that, these berries are low in sugar compared to some other fruits (such as Mangos or figs) so are ideal as a healthy snack.

When it comes to Strawberries, it’s best to go organic. Strawberries have a thin skin makes them vulnerable to pesticide residue, ranking them one of the highest fruits for pesticide residue. So why not grow your own in a pot in your garden, balcony or even a sunny window sill.
